Why does Android need a privacy app more than iPhone?

Android has no equivalent of iOS App Tracking Transparency. The Google Advertising ID is on by default and apps freely use it unless you manually go to Settings → Privacy → Ads → Delete advertising ID — a setting most users never find. Google Play services itself streams usage telemetry continuously. OEMs (Samsung, Xiaomi, etc.) add their own data collection on top. App Store moderation is also looser than Apple's, so the malware risk surface is larger. Network-level filtering is the more critical protection on Android precisely because the OS-level controls are weaker.

How does Casper install on Android? Is it the Play Store version?

Accepted Answer

Native Android app using the standard VpnService API (Android's equivalent of iOS's NetworkExtension). Available on Google Play. Install, sign in, tap to enable. Android prompts once to grant VPN permission (this is normal for any VPN app). After that, Casper runs in the background — there's a key icon in your status bar, and that's it. Optional: an APK from our site, for users who avoid Play Store entirely.

Will Casper work with my Google account / Google Play services?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Casper's default blocklist is tuned to keep Google's functional endpoints open — Sign-In, Play Store transactions, Maps, Drive, Gmail, etc. all keep working. What gets blocked are Google's tracking and ad endpoints (DoubleClick, Google Analytics, AdMob), and the same set of third-party trackers as on iOS (Facebook SDK, Mixpanel, Segment, etc.). If you ever notice a specific Google service breaking, one-tap pause solves it; we haven't seen this happen in normal usage.

Does Android allow per-app VPN routing, and does Casper use it?

Accepted Answer

Android does support per-app VPN allowlist/denylist (unlike iOS, which is all-or-nothing). Casper exposes a per-app override panel: by default all apps go through Casper, but you can exclude specific apps (banking apps, government apps, ones that misbehave on VPN). This is genuinely a place where Android's privacy story is more flexible than iOS's.

Will Casper drain my Android battery?

Accepted Answer

Under 2% per day in independent testing — same as on iOS. The DNS filtering happens on Casper's resolver, not on-device, so CPU impact is negligible. Modern Android VPN frameworks are tuned for low overhead. On phones with aggressive battery managers (some Xiaomi, OnePlus, Samsung models), you may want to whitelist Casper in the battery-optimization settings so the OS doesn't kill the VPN tunnel in the background — instructions in our setup guide.

How does Casper compare to AdGuard, NextDNS, or Blokada on Android?

AdGuard for Android and Blokada are excellent at network-level filtering on Android specifically. NextDNS works on Android too. Where Casper differs: it adds AI-based threat detection (phishing, malware C2, scam-site scoring on every DNS query) on top of standard blocklist filtering, and it's a single subscription that also covers iOS, macOS, and any other device. Does Casper work on Android tablets, Chromebooks, Android TV?

Accepted Answer

Tablets: yes — same Android app, same VpnService API. Chromebooks: depends on the model — Chromebooks that support Android apps and the standard VPN framework work fine. Android TV: the Casper app is available on Android TV; tracker and ad blocking matters here because smart-TV apps are aggressive about telemetry, often more so than phone apps.

What about Samsung / Xiaomi / OnePlus / Huawei OEM data collection?

OEM telemetry endpoints (Samsung Knox analytics, Xiaomi cloud, OnePlus heytap, etc.) are on Casper's default blocklist — these collect device usage, location, and account-linked data outside any third-party tracking framework. Blocking them at DNS level is the cleanest intervention; many of these endpoints can't be turned off via OS settings.
