A tracker blocker that only runs in your browser can't see what your other apps are doing. Network-level filtering can block connections to known tracking domains across apps on an iPhone before those connections complete.
Tracker blocker for all apps iPhone
Safari content blockers only see traffic that passes through Safari. When a news app, a game, or Instagram makes its own network connections outside the browser, a browser-only blocker has no visibility into those connections.
Apps can include software development kits (SDKs) for analytics, advertising, and attribution. These SDKs can make network connections independently of whatever's happening in Safari.
Why browser-only blocking misses activity outside your browser
Your iPhone makes network connections from apps other than your browser. A tracker blocker scoped to Safari protects one app out of many. Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt helps limit some cross-app tracking, but it only catches some of it.
What network-level tracking protection looks like
Network-level DNS filtering can block requests from any app — not just a browser — asking "what's the address for this tracker domain?" If that question is refused, the connection never opens, regardless of which app asked. That's a structurally different approach than a browser extension: it doesn't care which app made the request.
Casper's Cloak works this way. It filters known tracker and ad domains at the network level across iPhone, Mac, and Android, so the protection isn't limited to whichever app happens to use Safari's content-blocking APIs. The same filtering that blocks a tracker in a browser tab also applies when a free game, a news app, or a social app tries to reach the same tracker domain.
Getting set up
Casper's Cloak provides pre-configured, managed filtering across apps on your device.
What it doesn't replace
Network-level tracker blocking is one layer. It doesn't rewrite how apps request your data or change what permissions you grant them — those are separate settings in iOS itself. What it does is cut off network connections to known tracker and advertising domains before they complete, across every app making them, not just the one you're actively browsing in.
If you're trying to cut down on cross-app tracking without hunting for a separate tool for every app on your phone, see how Casper's Cloak's plans work at casperscloak.com/subscriptions.
