What does a VPN actually protect you from?
A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the internet, which protects you from people on your local network — like someone on the same coffee-shop Wi-Fi — snooping on or tampering with your traffic. It does not, by itself, stop ads and trackers from following you between apps, and it does not screen the sites and domains you connect to for phishing or malware.
The part a VPN covers: the tunnel
When you connect to a VPN, your traffic travels through an encrypted tunnel to the VPN's server before reaching the open internet. On a hostile network — a hotel, an airport, an open coffee-shop network — that tunnel is genuinely useful: it stops someone else on that network from reading or injecting into your traffic.
The part a VPN doesn't cover
Encrypting the pipe doesn't change what's inside it. A VPN alone:
- Doesn't block ads or trackers. If an app or website is designed to serve ads or track you, an encrypted tunnel carries that traffic just as faithfully as an unencrypted one.
- Doesn't screen for phishing or malware domains. A VPN routes you to whatever address you ask for — it doesn't evaluate whether that address is a fake banking login page.
- Doesn't stop cross-app tracking. Trackers embedded in apps still fire the same requests; they're just encrypted in transit.
Why Casper's Cloak adds more than a tunnel
Casper's Cloak starts from a WireGuard VPN tunnel, then layers two more things on top of it: DNS-level blocking of known ad, tracker, and threat domains across every app (the same technical approach used by tools like Pi-hole and NextDNS, pre-configured and managed), and machine-learning threat detection that scores domains in real time to catch phishing and malicious hosts. The tunnel protects the pipe; the rest of the stack decides what's allowed to travel through it.
The practical takeaway
If your main worry is public Wi-Fi, a VPN covers that specific risk well. If your worry is ads following you across apps, phishing links, or trackers piling up a profile on you, you need blocking and threat detection in addition to a tunnel — which is exactly what Casper's Cloak combines into one subscription for iPhone, Mac, and Android.
