Why do I need a privacy app on Mac — isn't macOS pretty private already?

The gap is the network side: nothing in macOS blocks ads, blocks third-party trackers across apps, or scores destinations for phishing before you visit them. macOS apps also have far more system access than iOS apps — non-sandboxed apps (i.e. most apps you download outside the App Store) can read large parts of your filesystem and freely make network connections. Network-level filtering is the cleanest place to intervene.

Does Casper replace Little Snitch or LuLu?

Little Snitch and LuLu are outbound firewalls — they prompt you when an app tries to make a new network connection, and you decide allow/deny. They're great for catching unexpected behavior and for understanding what your apps actually do. Casper is the always-on filtering layer: known-bad destinations (ads, trackers, phishing, malware C2) get blocked automatically with no prompts; everything else flows. The pair works well — Little Snitch for active inspection and one-off decisions, Casper for the standing protection that doesn't need attention.

Both. Universal binary — runs natively on Apple Silicon and on Intel Macs. Supports macOS Big Sur 11+ (network extension framework requires that minimum). Battery impact on M-series MacBooks is functionally zero — the filtering is on Casper's resolver, not on-device, and the modern macOS network extension framework is highly efficient.

Apple deprecated kernel extensions starting in macOS 11 in favor of safer user-space system extensions. On first launch, macOS prompts you to approve Casper in System Settings → Privacy & Security (standard for any modern VPN or filter app). No reboots, no kexts, no SIP changes.

Yes — they operate at different layers. Casper is network-level (DNS) — applies to every app on your Mac including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Brave, Arc, Mail, Slack, Spotify, every menu-bar utility. uBlock Origin and Brave Shields are browser-DOM level — they hide ads and elements inside web pages, which DNS can't do without breaking page layouts. The combination is genuinely additive: Casper kills the network request, the browser extension hides the leftover empty box. Many privacy-focused users run both.

Does Casper cover background processes, launch daemons, and command-line tools?

Yes. Because it runs as a system network extension, every outbound connection from any process on the machine routes through it — Chrome, Spotify, the Adobe Updater, your launch daemons, scripts you run from Terminal, your Docker containers, the various menu-bar utilities that quietly phone home. This is one of the bigger benefits of network-level filtering on Mac specifically: you'd never get this from a browser extension.

Will Casper break Apple services — iCloud sync, AirDrop, Continuity?

No. The default blocklist is tuned to leave Apple's functional endpoints (icloud.com, push.apple.com, gsa.apple.com, mzstatic.com, etc.) untouched. What gets blocked are Apple's analytics endpoints (xp.apple.com, telemetry endpoints) and third-party trackers. iCloud sync, AirDrop discovery, Handoff, Universal Clipboard, AirPods switching — all keep working.

What about macOS's built-in privacy features — Mail Privacy Protection, Hide My Email, iCloud Private Relay?

Accepted Answer

Casper is additive to all of those. Mail Privacy Protection (blocks email tracking pixels) is unaffected — that's an Apple Mail feature. Hide My Email gives you per-service aliases — completely orthogonal. iCloud Private Relay anonymizes Safari IP for iCloud+ users — note this is Safari-only, so Casper's protection (every app, plus filtering) is what catches Chrome / Firefox / Mail. If you have Private Relay on, it coexists fine with Casper.
