Why do I need a privacy app on iPhone — isn't iOS already private?

iOS does more for privacy than most platforms — App Tracking Transparency, App Privacy labels, Mail Privacy Protection, and iCloud Private Relay (for Safari, on iCloud+). But those protections are narrowly scoped: ATT only blocks one identifier (the IDFA), Private Relay only covers Safari, Mail Privacy only covers email pixel tracking, and App Privacy labels are self-reported. The gaps — tracking via fingerprinting, ads in non-Safari apps, phishing links opened from iMessage or SMS, and protection on hostile public WiFi — are where Casper sits.

How does Casper actually install on iPhone? Is it an app or a profile?

It's a native iOS app that uses Apple's standard VPN framework (NetworkExtension). Install from the App Store, sign in, tap to enable. iOS prompts once to add the VPN profile to Settings (this is normal for any VPN). After that, Casper runs in the background — there's a small VPN icon in your status bar, and that's it. No jailbreaking, no profile sideloading, no special configuration. Apple-approved mechanism.

Does Casper replace iCloud Private Relay?

They cover different things and can coexist. iCloud Private Relay (on iCloud+ subscribers) anonymizes Safari browsing IP via Apple's relays — it does not affect other apps, does not block ads or trackers, does not detect phishing. Casper protects all apps, blocks ads/trackers/phishing across the device, and adds public-WiFi encryption. If you have Private Relay, leaving it on for Safari is fine; Casper handles the rest. (Note: iOS only runs one active VPN profile at a time, so Casper-as-VPN runs alongside Private Relay, not stacked.)

Will Casper drain my iPhone's battery?

Independent testing puts battery impact under 2% per day for typical usage. The filtering work happens on Casper's DNS resolver, not on-device, so CPU impact is negligible. The persistent VPN connection itself is the main cost — and Apple's NetworkExtension framework is tuned to minimize that. In practice, most users notice no battery change.

Can I use Casper alongside NordVPN or ExpressVPN on iPhone?

Accepted Answer

Only one iOS VPN profile can be active at a time — so you'd switch between them. Most users find Casper covers what they originally bought separate products for (privacy, ad blocking, threat protection). What about my iPhone's Safari content blockers (1Blocker, AdGuard for Safari)?

Content blockers are Safari-only — they intervene at the DOM rendering layer inside Safari. Casper is network-level (DNS), running in the VPN profile, and protects every app on the device including Safari. They're complementary: keep a Safari content blocker for in-page element filtering (skinning ads visually) and run Casper for everywhere-else blocking. Many privacy users do both.

Does Casper work on iPad and Apple Watch?

iPad: yes — same iOS app, same NetworkExtension VPN profile. iPadOS supports the same VPN framework as iOS. Apple Watch: not directly — watchOS doesn't expose a VPN API to third-party apps. But cellular Apple Watch traffic routes through your paired iPhone when nearby, and Casper protects that traffic. Standalone watch cellular sessions away from iPhone are not protected.

What happens if I lose connection or Casper goes down?

Accepted Answer

Default behavior: if the Casper VPN tunnel drops, your traffic falls back to your normal carrier or WiFi DNS (i.e., you stay online — no kill-switch by default). Optional kill-switch mode is available in settings for users who'd rather have no traffic than unprotected traffic. The Casper service itself runs across multiple regions with automatic failover.
